I have never been to a dentist. My parents never took me. I’m graduated from college now and have a job, but I’m a little embarrassed to go. I’m sure my teeth are in horrible shape. I don’t even know how to face the dentist. I also have heard that dentists hurt and that makes me nervous. I’m sure mine will hurt more because I’ve never been and there is probably lots of problems, though I don’t feel problems.
Do you have any advice? How do I find a dentist who won’t think I’m gross for never being to the dentist?

Kathleen,
I would speak to some local dentists and tell them your situation. Most dentists that I know would not judge you. In fact, there are some dentists who feel it is their biggest success to help a fearful patient be comfortable with going to the dentist. Most of those dentist practice sedation dentistry. You can feel assured that they won’t judge you. In fact, they’d be proud of you for your desire for dental care.
It is possible that you need a lot of work. You have been very fortunate that you have not experienced dental pain in all these years. You may have gotten away with having any tooth infections. I wouldn’t worry about how much has to be done yet. The dentist will just do an x-ray, exam, and cleaning on your first visit. Any subsequent needed work will be discussed with you at the end of your appointment.
If you do need a lot of work, you can either do it in stages, or have a sedation appointment and get all of it done at once (depending on what procedures are necessary).
